“Live for now!”
The Pepsi catchphrase stuck with me a lot longer than the commercial did.
In my mind it is a perfect summary of the state of the world at present.
Everything is about the now.
We make rash decisions without considering the consequences.
We no longer see the value in waiting.
We want what we want, and we want it NOW.
I admit that I’m being a bit stereotypical.
I know that not everyone ignores planning for the future.
But I’m afraid that when it comes to spiritual things, it is not much of an exaggeration.
There is a real danger in living only in the now.
The now is downright scary.
At least for the Christian.
One doesn’t need to look further than the nearest TV screen, newspaper or billboard to confirm the atrocities that pervade our world.
But the Bible is clear that a day of reckoning is coming.
2 Corinthians 5:10 (NLT) reminds us that none of us gets to skip the judgement. “For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.”
Romans 14:12 (NIV) tells us, “So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”
And 2 Timothy 4:8 (NLT) assures us, “And now the prize awaits…the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give…on the day of his return. And the prize is…for all who eagerly look forward to His appearing.”
So sorry Pepsi, but I’ve got a lot riding on the future.
Living for the now just won’t cut it for me.
