Is there anything free in this world?
I mean really free; no strings attached, no expectations free.
Can you identify anything that falls into that category?
Let me qualify that…anything man-made?
My ten year old daughter’s response is “samples”; yet she almost immediately qualified that by saying “some samples”.
Almost everything supposedly-free in life comes with an implied expectation or responsibility. Ergo, not free.
For example, in certain countries citizens pay taxes for the infrastructure they enjoy. The bridges, parks, roads etc. aren’t actually free.
In another, the “free” health insurance is deducted monthly from working denizens.
Someone does you a favour, don’t be too surprised if they come looking for one later.
A thoughtful gift this week may imply a warning not to show up for my birthday empty-handed three months from now.
Okay, maybe I’m being too cynical here. But am I the only parent who expects respect and obedience if not for any other reason than I provide for my daughter’s every need?
Thankfully, God has no such expectations. His gift of salvation is offered clear and free of any strings or attachments.
There is absolutely nothing we can do to earn or repay it.
Romans 6:23 ESV tells us, “…the free gift of God is eternal life.”
What a relief!
Can you imagine trying to outdo such a magnanimous gift?
We would spend a lifetime trying and still be unsuccessful.
What is baffling to me though is that as humans we love “freebies”, yet many of us reject actual free gifts from God.
He gave us the Sabbath (the 7th day to rest after six days of work), but many reject it. We are too busy.
He gave us fresh air and sunshine, but many spend their days going from houses to cars then into buildings; rejecting the benefits of being in nature.
He provided us with guidelines for a healthy diet, but we reject them; choosing instead to eat as we please.
And these are just a few examples.
Maybe it’s the old case of thinking that something is too good to be true.
But trust me, we can take God at His Word.
So why not try one of His freebies today?
And do you know the great thing about getting something free?
You won’t be able to help yourself; you will have to tell someone about it.
