The Season of Giving – Day 5

Although we’ve established that our purpose in giving is not to get, there are benefits to be gained when you give.

Day 5: Proverbs 28:27 NLT

“Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to poverty will be cursed.”

True or False: When it comes to giving anything but money to the poor, we are good with that.

Clothes? Yes, we have some we can donate.

A meal? Yes, we can buy some food.

Now there’s nothing wrong with any of those responses, but sometimes cold, hard cash is the solution.

And I’m not sure why, but giving just doesn’t seem as easy then.

Why is it so hard to part with money?

I work hard for it, we say.

But this money is already earmarked for something, we reason.

So we cross to the other side of the street to avoid the beggar.

No change, we mumble as we scurry past the homeless person.

Well, two contrasting fates await us based on our responses to the plight of the poor.

On one hand, we are promised that we will never be in want if we give.

On the other hand, the opposite awaits us if we ignore them.

“The poor you will always have with you…”, we are told in Matthew 26:11 (NIV).

So what will our response be?
