The mind is a terrible thing to waste.
How many times have you heard that saying?
Do you believe it?
Well consider our thoughts, what do we spend our time thinking about?
Hands up, if you are always thinking happy, productive and positive thoughts!
On the other hand, does this sound familiar?
You wake up and almost immediately your mind starts running through your to-do list for the day. What a downer!
Then you emerge from bed, only to encounter a child who suddenly remembered homework due that morning or a spouse looking for a particular item of clothing that they MUST HAVE today.
Could the day get any worse, you wonder.
If only it ended there.
Ever heard of the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon?
An example of it would be when you’ve just bought a particular make and model of car and suddenly you begin to see it everywhere.
I am no psychologist, but I’d say our thoughts work in a similar way.
When we entertain negative thoughts, we begin to see the negative in everything; we gravitate towards it. And before you know it, we’re telling ourselves that nothing is right in our lives.
Now we know that this type of thinking does not lead us in the right direction.
Newsflash: the enemy knows this as well.
Think about it. Our decisions are made in our minds long before we engage in any action.
Our Heavenly Father knows this too and reminds us:
“As a man thinketh in his heart so is he…” Proverbs 23:7 KJV
“Above all else, guard your heart [mind], for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
As with most things that we need to overcome, it can be a struggle.
But practice makes perfect. You’ve heard of that one, right?
So the next time you’re tempted to wallow in the negative, pray and ask God to help you to turn your thoughts around.
Count your blessings; focus on the positive.
“Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is excellent…think on these things.” Philippians 4:8 NIV
