Self-reliance? There’s no such thing for the Christian.
When we take on the title of “Follower of Christ”, we are saying no to self every single day, and yes to full and total dependence on He who has the world in His hands.
Friends, it may give us a sense of self-worth to “feel” that we can take care of ourselves.
But that is a fallacy.
In Matthew 6:27 we read Jesus’s question, “And who of you by worrying can add one hour to [the length of] his life?”
In Job 38:4 God asks him, “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?”
In fact we only need to read chapters 38-39 of Job to see just how NOT in control we are.
Whether we want to believe it or not, only God can sustain us. He is our life support.
Today, He stands ready to supply our needs.
But will we trust Him to do that? Or will we run around like headless chickens, trying to figure things out ourselves?
One way sees us patiently and faithfully waiting while the other sees us worn and ragged.
Which will you choose?
